Understanding the sequestrations

27 Feb

The news may have you all panicked about the upcoming “sequestrations”.  The Democrats may have you believe that this is happening due to inaction from the Republicans.  The Republicans may point fingers towards the House of Senate.  The President may shake a finger at John Boehner, the Speaker of the House.  They would all be misleading you.  This sequestration that is approaching was designed and put together by bipartisan representation from both Houses.  Think back two summers ago.  When everyone was up in arms about whether or not to raise the debt ceiling, debates went on too long and Moody’s credit rating system downgrading the American credit score from a AAA rating to a AA rating.  That was when these sequestrations started.  Part of the deal that our politicians made was that if they couldn’t come to an agreement this back up plan would go into effect.  The back up plan was later labeled as the fiscal cliff.  Part of the fiscal cliff was cutting government spending which is now this whole sequestration business.  The sequestration would directly effect our government paid officials.  It would not effect our highest paid government employees like the President, Speaker of the House, Congress or Supreme Court Justices.  Think FBI, TSA, federal court employees, lower level Cabinet employees and so on.  Federal employees will be facing layoffs or furloughs.  Furloughs are layoffs.  When your boss can’t pay you for your full week’s worth of work he may give you less hours until business picks up.  In other words its a non paid sick day or non paid vacation day that you are forced to take.  Programs will also face budget cuts, less financial aid, less money towards small business loans, less money for research grants and so on.

With majority of American’s living paycheck to paycheck losing one day of work a week may mean a lot.  It may mean you are short on paying your bills on time each month.  It may mean that you can no longer afford to eat out one or two nights a week.  It may mean you can’t buy that extra item at the store.  This can create a domino effect that hurts our economy even more.
